For more than twenty-five years, Richard has been a photographer and printer. His work documenting the Exxon Valdez oil spill, in 1989 and 1990, is part of the White House photography archives and is part of the permanent collection at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks.

He has published three books on photography and been a contributor to two others. Richard's photographs, and writings, have appeared in Digital Photo Pro, View Camera, Lenswork,Outdoor Photographer, Professional Photographer Magazine, Storyteller Magazine,Rangefinder, and the Village Voice. Richard is the Executive Editor of Student Photo published four times a year by the Professional Photographers of America. His books include: Building A Photographic Library 2001 Texas Photographic Society Toning Techniques for Photographic Prints 2003 Amherst Media Photography at Night 2003 AMPHOTO, How to Take Great Photographs at Night 2003 Collins & Brown Texas Rocks-The Big Bend 2004 Texas Photographic Society. Richard was the Juror for the "Rarified Light" exhibition at the Anchorage Museum of Art in 2001 and also the Texas Photographic “Members Only” Show 2006. Richard was the Co-chair of the Silver Conference at Art Center College of Design in March of 2006 and co-editor of the Silver Journal. Richard sits on the advisory boards of the following schools and organizations: Watkins College of Art and Design- Nashville TN.Texas Photographic Graphic Society- San Antonio TX. East Los Angeles City College Los Angeles CA and the Center for Photographic Art-Carmel CA. He has lectured in the United States, England and Australia. Richard has taught workshops for The Calumet Institute, The Smithsonian-Library of Congress Folklife Series, The Santa Fe Workshops on the Road, and The Texas Photographic Society. Richard has produced and directed two one hour films (DVD) on photographic lighting technique, Portrait Lighting Techniques with Dennis Keeley and Portrait Lighting Techniques with Bobbi Lane. He is currently scoring a project about Yellowstone National Park in collaboration with California State University Monterey Bay. At present Richard is the National Education Coordinator for Calumet Photographic.
